Calexico @ Studio Babelsberg
Last night, Calexico was playing and recording tracks with an orchestra in Studio Babelsberg, a “Mittelstadt” between Berlin and Potsdam. This place is famous for its cinema studios, it’s where Metropolis was shot.
11 tracks were played with the full band and the Babelsberg Filmorchester, a performance streamed live on german radio Radio Eins and later to be used as bonus material.
Though it took some time to get used to the presence of the orchestra (the room was separated in two areas, Calexico on the left, orchester on the right), it was a really powerful experience. Joey Burns introduced every song, putting them into context. On Minas de Cobre : “This was the first song with wich we knew we would have liked to be an orchester. Somehow this dream has come true today.” Then Jairo’s horn and the orchestra’s brass section turned the studio’s surroundings into South America. The heat inside the studio helped, too. The setlist included beautiful Black Heart, Two Silver Trees really well sung by Joey, and new tracks Para, Epic and The Vanishing Mind which will be featured on their new album Algiers, out in september. The new songs Epic and Fortune Teller needed more work, but after only one day of rehearsal, the result was already pretty damn good !
